Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence occurs with increasing frequency as a person ages and has significant social, economic and health related effects. We will discuss the latest treatment advances for men and women with this condition.

Dr. Michael Albo is a urologist whose special interests are in voiding dysfunction, urinary incontinence, urodynamics, female urology, and pelvic floor reconstruction. Dr. Albo has extensive training and experience in performing pelvic floor reconstruction surgeries and surgeries for treating urinary incontinence as well as neurostimulation, botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections, and collagen implantation for treatment of urinary incontinence. He is also trained in a wide variety of medical and surgical techniques to manage voiding disorders and prostate disorders in men, including laser and microwave therapies.

Dr. Albo is Co-Director and founder of the UCSD Healthcare Women’s Pelvic Medicine Center (WPMC). The WPMC is San Diego’s only multi-specialty clinic dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of female pelvic floor disorders. The clinic is a cooperative effort between the Division of Urology and the Department of Reproductive Medicine, and is co-directed by obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Charles Nager. The WPMC brings together physicians and therapists from urology, gynecology, general surgery and physical therapy who work together to bring the latest diagnostic tools and treatments to women who have urinary incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. The WPMC is also committed to educating physicians of the future in this field and is involved in research on the national and regional levels.

In his research at UCSD, Dr. Albo focuses on medical and surgical treatments for urinary incontinence in women. He is co-principal investigator of the UCSD clinical center in the Urinary Incontinence Treatment Network, a multicenter, nationwide National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical research program. UCSD’s is one of nine centers in the national program, whose purpose is to determine the most effective ways of evaluating and treating patients with urinary incontinence.

Dr. Albo received his M.D. degree from the University of Utah, performed his surgical and urologic residency training at the University of Virginia and his fellowship training at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been at UCSD since 1996. He is a member of many national and local medical societies. Dr. Albo is certified by the American Board of Urology. Dr. Albo was recently recognized as one of San Diego’s Top Doctors for 2008, as selected by the San Diego County Medical Society in partnership with San Diego Magazine. He was also named on the Top Doctors list in 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2004.

For nearly 25 years, the Stein Institute for Research on Aging has sponsored a monthly Public Lecture Series, thanks to the efforts of its founding director, J. Edwin Seegmiller, M.D. This series allows affiliated faculty members of the Stein Institute for Research on Aging and other scientists from the UCSD School of Medicine, as well as individuals from surrounding academic and research institutions, to present the latest findings in their respective fields of expertise and share their present work with the general community. All of these lectures focus on topics related to healthy aging or age-related diseases. Over 250 public lectures have been presented. In addition to the actual lecture event, these lectures are also taped and televised on UCSD-TV, which reaches an audience of approximately 2.7 million households from San Diego and across the nation.

As well as being replayed on UCSD-TV, copies of the lectures are kept in the Stein Institute for Research on Aging’s library (the Suzanne Angelucci Educational Center),which is located on the second floor of the Stein Clinical Research Building on the UCSD School of Medicine campus. These videos are available for rental to faculty and current donors to the Stein Institute. Additionally, many of the public lectures are also available on UCSD-TV’s website “video on demand” programming.

Lectures are videotaped by UCSD-TV and air on Cox Digital Cable, Ch. 135; Time Warner Cable, Ch. 18; Time Warner Del Mar, Ch. 68; or UHF (without cable) channel 35. Program schedules are available at www.ucsd.tv/sira. Stein Institute lectures also air nationally on UCTV, available on Echostar Satellite's DISH Network, channel 9412; on cable in california; and via live webstream.
